Déstramage (descreening) : enlever le moiré des magazines et documents scannés

If you have ever scanned a magazine page, newspaper clipping, or printed photo and ended up with ugly dots, rosettes, or rainbow waves, you have met halftone moire. The fix is called descreening — removing the printing screen so the digital file looks clean again.

This guide explains why scan moire happens, how traditional descreen workflows work, and when an AI descreen tool is the faster path.

What is descreening?

Commercial print uses halftone screens: tiny CMYK dots arranged at fixed angles. Your scanner has its own sensor grid. When those two grids overlap, they create a secondary interference pattern — moire — on top of the real image.

Descreening means reconstructing a continuous-tone image from that dotted scan: kill the periodic screen, keep text sharp, and preserve faces and illustrations.

Where descreen moire shows up

  • Magazines & catalogs — fine CMYK screens on glossy paper
  • Newspapers — coarser screens that bloom into large waves when scanned
  • Yearbooks & printed photos — halftone portraits that shimmer after digitizing
  • Books & research papers — figures and photos reprinted from print masters

How to descreen in Photoshop (manual)

  1. Scan at a higher DPI than you need (e.g. 600 dpi for a 300 dpi deliverable).
  2. Convert to a smart object, then try Filter → Noise → Reduce Noise or carefully applied Gaussian blur on a duplicate layer.
  3. Use a layer mask so text and edges stay sharp while the dotted areas soften.
  4. Optionally apply a slight Unsharp Mask afterward — easy to overdo.

Some scanner drivers include a “Descreen” checkbox. It helps on uniform pages but often softens type and fails on mixed layouts (photos + headlines).

Verdict: Manual descreening works for experts, but it is slow, hard to batch, and usually trades sharpness for fewer dots.

One-click AI descreening

AI demoiré models are trained to separate periodic print screens from real image content. On Morie you can:

  • Upload a JPG/PNG/WebP scan
  • Let the model remove halftone and scan moire
  • Download a cleaner result in seconds — no masks or plugins

Use the dedicated online descreen / print moire fixer when your files are magazines, newspapers, or archival prints.

Descreening tips that still matter

  • Straighten first — rotated screens make patterns harder to kill.
  • Crop borders — empty margins and binder shadows waste detail.
  • Do not over-compress before upload — heavy JPEG artifacts fight the model.
  • Batch similar pages — same magazine issue → consistent settings.

Descreening vs. screen-photo moire

Descreening targets print halftones. Rainbow waves from photographing a monitor or TV are a different interference (pixel grid vs. camera sensor). For those, use the screen moire remover instead.

Conclusion

If you digitize print, descreening is not optional — it is the difference between an archival asset and a wavy mess. Try a free AI pass first; fall back to Photoshop only when you need pixel-level manual control.
